CANCELLED – COAST2COAST RALLY, 7/8 May 2021
Machars Car Club have confirmed that their planned ‘Coast2Coast Rally’ due to be staged on the 7/8 May this year has been cancelled.
Although plans were well underway and the route confirmed, the organisers were only too well aware of the ongoing situation regarding the Corona virus pandemic, but had delayed this announcement in December to see what the New Year would bring.
Unfortunately, with Covid continuing to blight the nation and no sign of a solution any time soon, the organisers were faced with no option but to cancel. The decision was taken at a full committee meeting last week with sponsors and partners being informed at the weekend ahead of this formal announcement.
The organisers wish to express their gratitude for the hard work and patience of all those involved including Dumfries & Galloway Council, Roads Department, local community councils, Stranraer Development Trust and Police Scotland, Motorsport UK, and of course the good folks of Stranraer & District and the wider Dumfries & Galloway community who have all been very welcoming and proactive in their support of bringing this exciting new event to Stranraer, Wigtownshire and the Dumfries & Galloway region.
Many sports fans and followers will also be disappointed, although not surprised, by this decision.
Event Rally Manager Roy Campbell said: “Of course we knew last month this would be the likely outcome, but decided to wait and see what might happen in the New Year. Despite the promise of new vaccines and treatments we are only too well aware that this sad nation-wide situation will not be resolved any time soon.”
“On that basis the club is seeking a new date next year for this exciting new motor sporting spectacle in the South West and have provisionally declared Saturday the 7th of May as the date for the 2022 Coast2Coast Rally. Too many club members and helpers have put too much time and effort into this project to lose it now, so preparations will continue to be made and plans refined. We really want to get this show on the road for the benefit of all who live and work here.”

Coast 2 Coast Rally 2021
The organisers of the inaugural Coast 2 Coast Rally scheduled to run over the weekend of 7/8 May 2021 would like to wish all potential competitors a Merry Christmas and hopefully a more positive New Year along with an assurance that progress continues to be made on plans for this exciting new addition to the British rallying calendar.
Although plans for the format had already been finalised for the maiden event earlier this year, the arrival of Covid19 scuppered the launch of this brand new Closed Road Rally.
Machars Car Club and friends had devised a compact route comprising three stretches of road run three times on the Saturday with Start/Finish and central servicing in Stranraer and this format remains unchanged.
Despite the restrictions imposed by Covid19 contact with relevant local businesses and residents has been maintained by phone and email while the organising team meets regularly courtesy of on-line conference calls and discussions. Not easy, but the experienced and knowledgeable team behind this imaginative concept continue to manage the process, identifying and solving issues without visiting and doorstepping.
However, the team is looking forward to a possible relaxation of those restrictions early in the New Year to once again get feet back on the ground and wheels on the road. Although much has been done, everything needs to be checked and double checked.
On a more encouraging note, both Donnan Construction and SVM Port Services have confirmed their continued support for this new venture. That’s a real boost to the team in these troubled times.
Fingers and tootsies crossed, here’s wishing for a return to normality sooner rather than later.
Merry Christmas, and may you all stay safe and secure until then, The Machars team.
More news next month …

And the good news is … The latest steps in the planning of the Stranraer based 2021 Coast 2 Coast Rally have been completed successfully and on time.
As any rally organiser knows only too well, organising a stage rally is a long and time consuming process and each part of that has to be accomplished within a certain time scale.
As part of that procedure, Machars Car Club have completed and submitted their Application to Dumfries and Galloway Council for a Motor Race Order (MRO). The granting of an MRO will allow certain stretches of public road to be closed for the purposes of running a Special Stage Rally. This follows the submission of a request to Motor Sport UK for a Permit to run such an event. The words ‘Ya Beezer’ spring to mind!
This inaugural event in the south west corner of Scotland is scheduled to take place over the weekend of 7th and 8th May, with a ‘shakedown’ test set up on the Friday and competition on the Saturday.
Three stretches of road will be closed for the event to manage potential congestion and provision will also be made for spectators.
Naturally this is all subject to the wider issue of Covid19, but news from the Government this week is encouraging for the whole nation, and also for rally fans and the Machars Car Club team. Just as encouraging is the continued support and backing of Donnan Construction and SVM Port Services for this local event, a real confidence booster in these uncertain times.
Fingers crossed everyone, eh?
25th July 2020
Today we should all have been in Stranraer, gearing up for the inaugural Coast2Coast closed road rally.
The heavy overnight rain and continuing showers this morning, leading into a warm dry afternoon – and with it the switch from wet to slick tyres – would simply have added to the challenge and enjoyment, for competitors, officials and spectators alike. But alas, it was not to be.
Assuming a return to some form of normality for all UK rallying over the coming months, work is ongoing to agree a date for the event in 2021, and we hope to be in a position to confirm that soon.
We are also grateful for the continued support of our event partners, sponsors, local councillors, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Stranraer Development Trust, and look forward to welcoming you all to Stranraer in the near future.
23rd March 2020
Taking into consideration our options, and having reviewed the current situation, the organisers have taken the difficult and sad decision to cancel the 2020 Coast 2 Coast Rally, due to run on 25th July.
For the foreseeable future, progress in the planning of such an event is not possible, and with the essential emergency and volunteer services advising us of their concern regarding the event’s needs, the decision to cancel has proven inevitable.
The team have all had a very steep learning curve, however we have all benefited from the hard work put in thus far, and on a positive note, once this Coronavirus issue has been defeated, we can commence organisation of the 2021 Coast 2 Coast Rally, which we hope to run on Saturday 24th July 2021.
Stay Safe, and Thank You,
Coast 2 Coast Rally
Coast2Coast Rally. Official Launch. 17th February 2020
Since its formation in 1950, the members of Machars Car Club have upheld their common goal, of providing and promoting motor sport for the masses in Wigtownshire. Over the years the club has continually raised the standard of its events – with 2020 representing another huge leap forward for the club.
With the Scottish Parliament introducing new legislation in 2019, motor clubs are now able to organise closed-road motor rallies across Scotland, for the first time in over 80 years. It will come as little surprise that Wigtownshire is awash with roads prime for rallying, therefore we are privileged to today become one of the first groups in Scotland to make full use of these new and exciting opportunities.
The inaugural “Coast 2 Coast Rally” features a compact route, based out of Stranraer, using three stages near to the town, run three times each on the day – totalling 52 competitive stage miles, timed to the tenth of a second. The two other such events of this type currently being run in Scotland – the Jim Clark Rally in the Scottish Borders, and the Mull Rally in Argyll & Bute – both prove extremely popular with competitors and fans alike, as well as this format being well established in Ireland. As such, given Stranraer’s prime strategic location, we anticipate significant interest in the event, from both all corners of the British Isles, and both sides of the Irish Sea.
As part of the well-defined and rigorous approval process, we are grateful our many partners, both local and further afield, who have already been hugely supportive, and instrumental in guiding the project through to where it is today. Dumfries & Galloway Council, Roads Department, local community councils, Stranraer Development Trust and Police Scotland, as well as the sport’s national governing body Motorsport UK, have all been very proactive and forthright in their support of bringing this exciting event to Stranraer, Wigtownshire and Dumfries & Galloway.
Our public relations team have been very active, advising of our proposals to all house holders / property owners whose land is adjacent to our proposed route. As such, we are delighted to report an overwhelmingly positive response to date, and thank our residents for their continued support.
The scale of the event being not inconsiderable, we are delighted to confirm the support of a number of local businesses – reaffirming that this most prestigious event will play a part in raising the profile and wider recognition of Stranraer and Wigtownshire. With the annual impact of the event to the local community estimated to be in excess of £500,000, we look forward to working with all of our commercial partners, to broadcast everything that Stranraer and the wider area has to offer.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your contribution to the planning and organisation of the 2020 Coast 2 Coast Rally, and continuing to work with you in the build up to bringing this most engaging event to Wigtownshire. We look forward to offering a warm welcome to competing crews and supporters from across the British Isles on Saturday 25th July 2020, and establishing the event as an annual highlight in the local, and national, sporting and events calendar.
